Lanterns were illuminated at a Tokyo commemoration event on Tuesday, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake on Thursday.
Washi paper lanterns were lit at twilight for the Washi Candle Garden event at the Tokyo Midtown commercial complex in the capital's Minato Ward.
The lanterns bore messages from people including survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in three prefectures in the Tohoku region, such as "I am grateful for receiving lots of support" and "I will not forget what happened that day."
Tama University students have organized the event every year since 2011. About 15,000 messages have been gathered over the past 10 years, and many of them were written on lanterns at the event, which is being held for the last time this year.
The event ends on Thursday.
