Lansing man dies when hit by vehicle while crossing busy street

Dec. 26--A 64-year-old man was hit by a vehicle and killed as he crossed a street Christmas morning in south suburban Lansing, police said.

Peter Puschkar, of the 3700 block of 173rd Court in Lansing, was pronounced dead at 7:10 a.m. Friday at Munster Community Hospital, according to the Lake County, Ind., coroner's office. Puschkar is believed to have died from the blunt force trauma suffered in the accident, according to the coroner's office.

Lansing Police had been dispatched at 6:10 a.m. Friday to the 17600 block of Torrence Avenue, just north of 176th Place, where officers discovered the man in the roadway, according to a Lansing news release.

Puschkar walked into the street to cross Torrence Avenue, and witnesses and the driver told investigators that the driver tried to stop to avoid hitting Puschkar, but was unable to, according to the release.

Puschkar suffered serious injuries to the head and legs, police said. Although he was found unconscious, he was still breathing when paramedics arrived at the scene, police said.

The victim was rushed to Munster Community Hospital, where he later died, police said.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information to call the Lansing Police Department at 708-895-7150.
