Landslips wreak havoc as rain drenches parts of Victoria

The landslip on Griggs Road happened about a month ago, but the South Gippsland Shire Council says it is reluctant to give a timeframe on when the area will be fixed.

In parts of west and south Gippsland rain has been so heavy it has caused landslides, closing local roads for months.

It is a stark contrast to central and east Gippsland, which is struggling through a third year of drought.

In the South Gippsland Shire Council area there are currently nine "significant" landslips, including on Griggs Road, north of Leongatha, in a settlement called Hallston.

"We're down to one lane because of the landslip, and we've been told it could take 12 to 18 months to repair," Griggs Road resident Yvonne Lindsay said.

"We have lots of families here with young children, we have elderly people that are unwell, there's schooling issues, selling of livestock is harder and getting grain is harder."

With Griggs Road down to one lane for locals only, residents fear what will happen if there has to be a total shut down for repair work.

The closest town Leongatha, is 20 minutes away, but if the road closes it could potentially add an extra hour of travel time.

"We'd have to go via the goat tracks," Mrs Linsday said.

"These are roads that are not suitable for a normal two wheel drive, so if you don't have a four wheel drive it's going to be a rough trip."

John Moylan, South Gippsland Shire's manager of infrastructure and delivery, said he is reluctant to give a timeframe on when Griggs Road will be fixed.

"It's a really significant slip," he said.

"For the other eight significant slips in the area, I can envisage what the solution might be, but to be honest, at Griggs Road a solution doesn't really stand out."

No simple solution

The council is now getting quotes from geotechnical companies to repair the nine slips, and is prioritising Griggs Road as one of the first to be fixed.

"We've got four road closures at the moment, so three roads in addition to Griggs Road," Mr Moylan said.

"Griggs Road is the most problematic in terms of the impact on residents."

Mrs Lindsay said the road block is also causing rubbish issues.

"We have to pay for our rubbish to get removed — it's not part of our rates, now our rubbish is being affected," she said.

"The truck can't get through to pick up our bins, so we've had to leave rubbish at other people's places who've kindly offered, but it's embarrassing.

"Who wants to dump their rubbish at other people's places?"

Mr Moylan said the council would consider installing a bin at the road block for residents to use, but he said a formal request is yet to be lodged.

'Come and do it'

Dane and Emily Perczyk are beef farmers with three young children.

Their property sits below the Griggs Road landslide, and they have given the council permission to do repairs immediately.

They think the council should fund the repairs itself rather than wait for State and Federal funding.

"We've received letters in our mailbox, and the council have told us there's plans being submitted to come up with a solution to fix our road," Mr Perczyk said.

"But this is a matter of emergency — don't put it on the backburner for 12 months."

Mrs Perczyk said the council needed to come and speak to the residents in person.

"The council has said to us they need to start from the bottom up to repair this slip," she said.

"They have the permission — come and do it."

Mr Moylan said the damage is beyond the council's funding capabilities.

"My view is, it's a significantly complex site that will cost a lot of money," Mr Moylan said.

"My gut feeling is that it would be beyond the capability of council to fix Griggs Road."
