Landslip on Ayrshire railway line causing chaos for passengers

A landslip on an Ayrshire railway line is causing chaos for passengers this afternoon.

ScotRail has confirmed it is unable to run trains on the line between Kilmarnock and Dumfries due to the incident between Thornhill and Holywood in Dumfriesshire.

Staff from Network Rail Scotland are on site and assessing the situation.

But customers have been warned that disruption on the cross-border route, which connects Glasgow Central with the Cumbrian city of Carlisle, is expected to last until the end of the day.

Rail replacement bus services are now being deployed. Stations affected on the route include Auchinleck and New Cumnock in East Ayrshire and Kirkconnel and Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire.

In a series of tweets, ScotRail said: "We’ve received reports of a landslip between Kilmarnock and Dumfries meaning we’re unable to run trains between Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

"Staff are on site carrying out an assessment as to what repairs will be needed. We'll keep you updated on their progress.

"We’ve alternative transport confirmed at Dumfries, one bus provided by Emac and one by AAA bus. We have two stand-by buses at Kilwinning which are being diverted to Kilmarnock.

"Disruption is expected until the end of the day. We have two replacement coaches en route to Kilmarnock and we have two at Dumfries. Once they’re all in place, a shuttle service will operate calling at all stations."

Network Rail Scotland added: "We're dealing with a landslip between Kilmarnock and Dumfries and staff are attempting to assess the situation before it gets dark. It's unlikely that repairs will be completed today. Follow @ScotRail for the latest travel updates."
