Landslides and “significant flooding” have forced the closure of the Eden Project in Cornwall.
The botanical gardens, built on a reclaimed quarry, were hit by heavy rain overnight as the wider region saw evacuations of people from their homes and travel disruption.
A spokesperson for the Eden Project confirmed the site was dealing with an incident involving flooding.
“High volumes of rainwater caused several landslips on the edge of the former quarry,” a spokesperson told The Independent.
“Managers closed the site as a safety precaution and are assessing the damage. There has been no injury to persons.”
The site will be closed on Monday before the situation is reassessed, they added.
The Eden Project reopened for visitors when the second national lockdown lifted and Cornwall entered tier 1 on 3 December.
Advice on when the attraction would reopen will be available on social media and the Eden Project website, the spokesperson added.
