Torrential rains in western Japan's Chugoku region on Tuesday caused a series of landslides and flooding, killing two people, whose house was destroyed in a landslide. In the western part of Shimane Prefecture, the Gono River flooded in two places.

Landslides occurred in various parts of Hiroshima Prefecture. In Higashi-Hiroshima, a two-story wooden house collapsed in a mountain landslide, killing the resident, 55-year-old Shigemi Kurakane. Late Tuesday night, another body was found on the ground floor. Hiroshima prefectural police and other authorities are investigating the incident, suspecting the body is his 84-year-old mother Chiyoko, who lived with him in the house.

According to a 74-year-old male neighbor, who rushed to the scene, Shigemi was buried up to his neck in mud, saying, "I can't breathe. Help me." The neighbor, who was holding Shigemi's hand and saying, "hold on," was replaced by a firefighter. "I can't believe it because I was sure he would make it out alive," the neighbor said.
