Landslide in Mandi damages agricultural land

MANALI: A huge chunk of mountain collapsed in Sahan village in Dharampur sub-division of Himachal’s Mandi district on Wednesday early morning, damaging 10 bigha of agricultural land. Nobody was harmed in the incident but the land has been rendered useless by a thick layer of debris covering it.

The mountain had developed huge cracks after recent rains. The residents were taking precautions as they had realised the possibility of a landslide. The mountain started collapsing at about 3am on Wednesday and slide continued for many hours.

When villagers visited the spot in the morning, they found a vast area covered with 10 to 30ft thick layer of debris. The land was roughly measured 10 bigha. Nearly 100m stretch of the under-construction road to connect the village has also been buried under the debris.

Panchayat president Dan Singh said land of five families has been buried completely. “A patch of road, which was still under construction, has also been damaged. The officials have been informed about the incident,” he said.

Meanwhile, landslide at 7 Meel near Pandoh in Mandi district has continued to affect traffic movement on Chandigarh-Manali national highway. Another landslide had blocked the highway on Tuesday evening. The road remained blocked for over 12 hours. Traffic movement on the highway was resumed on Wednesday morning.
