Hours before the XFL’s inaugural draft began Tuesday, quarterbacks were assigned to each of the league’s eight teams.
Among the big names are former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, who helped lead the Buckeyes to the 2014 national title before spending three seasons as a backup in the NFL, and former Oklahoma signal-caller Landry Jones.
Cardale Jones will head to the D.C. Defenders, and Landry Jones will play for the Dallas Renegades.
Landry Jones, 30, will be reunited with his old college coach, Bob Stoops, in Dallas. He spent six seasons as a reserve in the NFL with three teams, mostly with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Matt McGloin, a Penn State product who started seven games during his tenure with the Oakland Raiders earlier in the decade, is expected to lead the New York Guardians, and Aaron Murray, a former Georgia star and Kansas City Chiefs backup, will head to the Tampa Bay Vipers.
The Houston Roughnecks received Phillip Walker, who went to Temple and spent time on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad. Jordan Ta’amu, who was assigned to the St. Louis Battlehawks, was a two-year starter at Mississippi and went undrafted in the 2019 draft.
Two quarterbacks from the failed AAF were also assigned: Troy product Brandon Silvers will go to the Seattle Dragons and Luis Perez, a Division II national champion at Texas A&M-Commerce, is set to play for the Los Angeles Wildcats.
Later in the draft, former Northern Illinois wide receiver TommyLee Lewis went to the Renegades in the second round.
