Landon Collins wants to prove himself before wearing Sean Taylor’s number

Whether new Washington Redskins safety Landon Collins would wear the No. 21 of Sean Taylor has been a hot topic of discussion since he signed the deal in free agency.

Collins wore the number elsewhere and hasn’t been shy about idolizing Taylor. But he also understands the number is off limits.

“I would love to wear the jersey,” Collins said, according to Redskins.com’s Jake Kring-Schreifels. “But I’m going to take it as I’m going to prove myself and try to get the jersey next year.”

He expanded on the initial thought: “I know myself, I know my game, I know how I’m going to play, so I’m not really worried about the season, it’s more people understanding that they see the same passionate player that ST was. Like anybody else, I wouldn’t want nobody else to where a number that doesn’t go out and play hard, have the leadership, have the passion, have the drive, have the hunger that he had each and every Sunday.”

Collins playing in the same manner as his idol was never in question. He may never get to don the number itself, but it sounds like he’s set on living up to expectations either way.

In a fun turn of events, Collins received a signed, game-worn Taylor jersey from Dan Snyder. Notables such as Clinton Portis have been vocal, though, about Taylor’s number remaining off limits.
