Landon Collins, Quinton Dunbar didn’t participate in OTAs for precautionary reasons

The Washington Redskins were down two notable defenders in the secondary Monday to start OTAs.

New safety Landon Collins didn’t participate in the practice as he works his way back from December shoulder surgery.

And as Redskins.com pointed out, Quinton Dunbar has to tiptoe around a nerve issue: “Dunbar, meanwhile, is further along in his recovery process after landing on IR with a leg injury on Dec. 5. His absence from OTAs, Gruden said, is more precautionary than anything. Since his injury involved nerve damage, the Redskins want to make sure he’s 100 percent before being inserted back into the secondary.”

It is only May, so the two key pieces of the secondary missing some time right now doesn’t hurt.

In fact, it might help: with the duo down, guys like Troy Apke and Deshazor Everet were getting some key reps that could help along their development and the team’s overall depth.

Given the circumstances, Collins and Dunbar holding out until training camp wouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
