Landlord suing Liverpool council amid claims letters 'sent to wrong addresses'

A private landlord has told how he has lodged a civil claim potentially worth hundreds of thousands of pounds against Liverpool Council in a row over claims of wrongly addressed mail.

Last week, the ECHO reported how enforcement officers instructed by the High Court visited the Cunard Building.

That led to the local authority paying out about £90,000 to enforce nearly 50 legal writs, the man behind the action, Shaun Maharaj, claims.

Mr Maharaj claims there are more than 100 extra alleged data protection breaches which will soon be heard in court and could lead to more writs.

The landlord, based in London, who has numerous properties in Liverpool, said letters relating to his business and tenants had been consistently sent to the wrong address for two years.

Mr Maharaj claims the "confusion" has led to "strain and stress" for him and his tenants, and resulted in him losing tenants.

He told the ECHO: "Liverpool Council sent out very sensitive data over and over again to the wrong address.

"It did not allow me to run my business correctly.

"There was total confusion, from November 2018 until now, putting strain and stress on my tenants, and on me.

"I'm gobsmacked this continued even when I was telling them the correct address for letters to be sent.

"It's had an impact on my health and taken its toll."

Mr Maharaj said letters might contain important information like benefit cap details or enforcement action arrangements.

A Liverpool Council spokesman said: "This matter relates to a civil claim which we are still challenging through the courts, so it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
