Landlord slammed for joking she withholds packages for tenants who can't pay rent

A landlord who faced fierce backlash for a video in which she joked she withholds deliveries from tenants who are behind on rent has since clarified it was a comedy skit.

Abbe Awosanya, who says she is a comedian, posted the video to TikTok and it's since racked up millions of views across various social media platforms.

The clip shows the landlord from New York pretending receive a delivery at her front door before throwing it on the floor while dancing to Skechers by DripReport.

The captions read: "My tenant is late on rent and is avoiding me. But has money to order so I take all their packages until they pay up."

It finishes with the message: "I'm so petty" followed by three laughing emojis.

Abbe was slammed in the comments, with many suggesting the packages may have contained essentials such as baby formula.

When one commented: "Late rent vs federal offense", Abbe replied to clarify it had been a joke, writing: "Thanks for the concern. All my mail but it's nice that yall only care about renters like landlords don't have bills."

She later added a second video to say it had been a comedy skit and apologised for the 'bad joke', saying she would never interfere with another person's mail.

It read: "As a comedian, I get to depict society in humorous ways, taking on various characters and making skits.

"Looking back at the skit, I realized it was a bad joke. I would never tamper with anyone's mail, all those deliveries are mine.

"I'm sorry to have upset so many people, this is a sensitive time for many and I'm in it as well.

"Apologies once again. Cheers."

Abbe told Buzzfeed the video had been made in jest as all her current tenants were 'paid up'.

She added: "Honestly, in the past, I had this issue with other tenants and I wished I could do this to them because they were blatantly ignoring me. Nothing to do with current tenants.

"If my tenants told me they couldn’t pay, I would understand. My tenants have been late before."
