Landlord facing prosecution after 30 tenants found in 3-bed house in east London

Thirty tenants were found crammed into the "dangerous" terrace home

A landlord is facing prosecution after 30 tenants were found crammed into a “dangerous” three-bed terrace house.

Police and council officers raided the property in Dagenham on December 16 and found dozens of people appeared to be living there in squalid conditions.

They believe more than 25 people, including children, had been squeezed into the main building in Albert Close.

Others were found to be sleeping on mattresses on the floor in an illegal makeshift shed in the back garden.

Barking and Dagenham council said it is now serving the landlord with an enforcement notice for contraventions under the Housing Act, including fire safety, damp and disrepair.

If convicted the landlord could face an unlimited fine plus court costs.

Margaret Mullane, the council’s cabinet member for enforcement and community safety, said landlords “have to play by the rules”.
