Landing craft used in Saving Private Ryan to feature at Bristol Harbour Festival

As ever, there will be plenty to see and do at this year's Harbour Festival, with something to interest and entertain people of all ages.

The major stages in the Harbourside Amphitheatre, Queen Square and Millennium Square will play host to live music, circus performances and dance routines, making for a typically fun-filled weekend.

Of course, there will also be plenty to watch on the water too. From familiar sights such as The Matthew, SS Great Britain and the city’s colourful ferries to the many visiting tall ships and leisure craft, the waters will be awash with colour and activity.

And history buffs will be very interested to hear that a very famous landing craft will be one of the many things making an appearance on the water over the weekend.

Built in the 1950s and recently brought back to full running order, Landing Craft Alpha Oscar is very similar to the Higgins boat used during WW2.

The Landing Craft has been owned by the vintage military vehicle group the Shopland Collection for 16 years.

Following its decommissioning from the US Navy in the early 1990s, it was snapped up by a production company and used in the filming of Saving Private Ryan, as well as numerous other Hollywood productions.

The Landing Craft will be leaving Portishead Marina on Friday morning at 0730 hours and can be seen motoring up the River Avon to moor outside MShed for the weekend. The Landing Craft recently took part in the commemorative events for the 75th anniversary for D-Day in Gosport.

The landing craft is being brought to Bristol by both the Shopland Collection and the team behind The Dig For Victory Show, a 1940's family festival held in North Somerset.
