Bushwalker Christopher Karmadonoff has been missing in rough terrain in NSW since Saturday. (HANDOUT/NSW POLICE)

A large search is underway on the NSW south coast for a man who failed to return from a bushwalk.

Police say planes and helicopters are involved in the search for 22-year-old Christopher Karmadonoff who has been missing since Saturday morning.

He took food and water with him when he set off along Back Creek Road at Nethercote but hasn't contacted friends or family since.

He's described as being about 187cm tall, of medium build with brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a green and blue fishing shirt with board shorts and work boots.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
