Lanchester farmers' market adds crafty new ideas this April

Organisers of a series of monthly farmers' markets in County Durham are opening up the event to include a range of crafts this April.

The markets in Lanchester have been attracting around 1,500 visitors since being set up at Christmas and the next on April 25 will add 24 craft stalls to the 35 food stalls on offer.

Among the new attractions will be a range of bespoke gift ideas including jewellery, paintings, hand-made lights and wood turning and crochet products.

There also will be four street food stalls adding to the mix.

Out to tempt the tastebuds will be a butchery section from three farms; bread from a renowned Sunderland bakery and spicy sauces from two award-winning traders.

And adding an exotic touch will be treats from Europe.

A spokesman said: "We have pasta and pastries from Italy, oils, honey, olives and pastries from Greece" and added there also will be "the best pies and sausage rolls from Cumbria; cheese sellers, Indian cuisine and spices".

"As well as these we have amazing scotch eggs, cheese cakes, scones and a stall that sells cupcakes for dogs!"

The farmers' market will take place in the car park of the Kings Head Hotel in Lanchester, the country pub in Station Road, from 11am until 2pm and, to keep an eye on numbers, it will be ticketed - but tickets will be free.

Social distancing is a priority at the markets and, in addition to the two-metre rule, there will be a one-way system as well as Covid safety-trained marshals to ensure that queues do not build and the market adheres to the policy of "pass and chat" rather than "huddle and cuddle".

The free tickets for the market are available to book now. See here or visit its Facebook page here.
