Lancefield Quay flats to be 'partially demolished' after fire

Work to rebuild a block of flats badly damaged by a fire is set to begin.

Dozens of residents displaced by the fire on December 9, now face a two-year wait to return to their homes.

More than 200 people were affected by the blaze with 24 out of 92 apartments still inaccessbile.

A partial demolition of the worst affected flats will begin on March 2.

Glasgow-based Nixon have been appointed to oversee the project which is expected to take two-years.

Around sixty firefighters and 15 appliances tackled the "well-developed" blaze at its height.

Lancefield Quay was closed for more than 48 hours while investigations took place.

There was no reports of injuries.

Originally a quayside transit store built in 1947, the building was converted in the late eighties as part of an urban renewal plan for the city.

NIXON Director Dominic MacConnell said: “We understand this is a sensitive and anxious time for the residents. Our priority is to begin the first phase of works and to ensure we work together with residents and contractors and all those affected by the fire.

"The building is loved by its residents and we look forward to returning it to them and to the city.”

Ken Robertson, director of Lancefield Quay Riverside Limited, the self-factoring company which manages the building. He added: “Our priority is first and foremost to restore our landmark building for our residents.

"We have appointed Glasgow-based multidisciplinary company NIXON to lead the engineering, architectural and project management works.

"We look forward to working closely with them to complete the projects and to see our residents returned to their homes.”
