Lanarkshire WWII veteran celebrates turning 100 with friends and family

A Second World War veteran celebrated turning 100 with a splendid party.

John MacKenzie, who lives in Kings Park, Rutherglen, celebrated his birthday on Saturday, July 2.

The party took place at the Burnside Hotel in the town, with around 40 of his friends and family there to congratulate him.

John’s granddaughter Fiona MacDonald-Laird spoke to Lanarkshire Live about his incredible achievements, and said: “We all think grandad is amazing, and he’s got us through so many tough times.

There’s no one quite like him.

“He served during the Second World War. He was quite young when he was drafted into service, he was there for the full of the war, and then he came back and met my gran, Chrissie MacLeod.”

John was only 18 when he was called to serve in the army as a driver in the Engineer Regiment.

After he returned to Rutherglen, he met his future wife and married in 1952 and went on to have two daughters, Catriona MacKenzie and Christine MacDonald.

He then took a job at the Tennent’s factory in Glasgow as a plumber, enjoying a long and successful career.

John still keeps in touch with several of his work colleagues.

Fiona added: “My grandad is a social person. He loves meeting new people and spending time with his great-grandchildren, Meadow, Harrison and Kacey.

“He loves the sun and being out in the garden and is a real family man. He’s a total gentleman, we’re always saying that no one is going to live up to him.

“He comes from the Isle of Skye originally and would love to go back up there, we’re trying to make it happen next year.

“We really just want to wish him a happy birthday and let him know that we all love and appreciate him.”
