Lanarkshire workers at Dawnfresh have been 'betrayed' as MSP calls on Scottish Government to pay redundant staff

Staff who were let go by Dawnfresh Seafoods in Lanarkshire last week are feeling "shocked, betrayed and scared", says Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon.

The Scottish Labour politician has been fighting the corner of workers following the devastating blow of 200 jobs being lost through the Uddingston factory's immediate closure.

She is now calling on the Scottish Government to step and take action to support local employees who were left jobless without pay just last week.

It's understood the shock announcement of the firm going into administration has left some locals turning to crisis grants and foodbanks.

And after turning up to work on Tuesday, March 1, workers were told they wouldn't even be getting their weekly wage which was due that Friday.

Ms Lennon has since raised the issue at Holyrood.

She told Lanarkshire Live : “I am urging the Scottish Government to step in and pay the betrayed Dawnfresh workers what they are owed.

“Last week I chaired an emergency meeting for Dawnfresh workers and the Bakers union on what should have been pay day.

“It’s disgraceful that the workers have not been paid for the hours that they have worked.

“You can’t blame these loyal Dawnfresh workers for feeling shocked, betrayed and scared.

“After all, these food production workers helped to feed the nation during the pandemic.

“They've helped millionaire businessman, Mr Alastair Salvesen build up the great wealth that he has, and now some of them are turning to crisis grants and foodbanks.

“I'm meeting with the Scottish Government this week, but these workers need support now.

"They can’t take on one of Scotland’s richest men on their own, but the Scottish Government can and should.

“It will be easier for the government to recoup this money and it would give the workers peace of mind and free up time to look for other work.”
