Lanarkshire thug jailed for robbing couple armed with a knife and knuckleduster

A thug who robbed an East Kilbride couple who owed him money has been jailed for three years.

Daryl Begg, armed with a knife and a knuckleduster, warned the man he would "rip his jaw clean off" if he wasn't paid.

He made off in their car, but was caught when the terrified couple ignored his warning and went to the police.

Begg, 27, appeared from custody via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted charges of attempted extortion and robbery as well as possession of a knife in public and driving the stolen car while unfit through drink or drugs.

The court heard Begg and another man turned up at the couple's home on July 18 last year.

The man opened the door and the men pushed past him. Begg was carrying a knuckleduster.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said: "Begg immediately told the man 'you owe me money'.

"The victim said he had agreed to pay £150 that Friday, but the accused insisted he was due more than that.

"He refused to leave and said 'I want your car'.

"The female said he wasn't getting the car, but Begg unzipped his jacket, produced a kitchen knife and said 'give me the keys or you know what will happen'.

"The keys were then handed to him and Begg warned the car would be 'going into storage' if he did not get his money by Friday, adding 'I'll be back'.

"He then told the woman, 'if he does not give me the money I'll rip the jaw clean off him with this. If you grass your husband's getting that'.

"Begg gestured with his hand across his body which the woman took to mean that her husband would be slashed."

Begg and his accomplice fled in the couple's Vauxhall Astra, but the police were alerted and less than two hours later officers found the vehicle at Clyde Tower, East Kilbride.

It was damaged and had a puncture. Begg was in the driver's seat. Police officers recovered a knife from his jacket sleeve.

Begg was jailed for 28 months at the same court in 2020 after admitting attempted extortion and robbery charges.

On that occasion he robbed a man of jewellery in Shotts over a debt and took his former girlfriend's Mercedes car, again over money owed.

Defence agent Peter Malone said the dad of three regretted his involvement in the latest crimes.

The solicitor added: "He has had substance misuse issues over the years and is aware he requires to address these if he is to refrain from further offending."

Jailing Begg, Sheriff John Speir said: "You put this couple through a terrifying ordeal in their own home.

"From the information I have, that has had a persistent and lasting effect on the quality of their lives."

Begg was also banned from driving for a year.
