Lanarkshire thug jailed for failed robbery in which he used a knife and spray

A thug who used a knife and an unknown spray in a failed robbery attempt has been jailed for two years.

Franceso Daguanno eventually left empty-handed after his brave victim fought back.

Daguanno, 29, appeared from custody at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

He admitted assaulting David Rettie with intent to rob him outside the victim's home in Loch Road, Chapelhall, on June 20 last year.

The attack happened around 5am.

Mr Rettie, 30, and friend Ryan McCaig spotted Daguanno, whom they knew from school, walking up the driveway carrying a holdall.

They went outside and realised he was holding a large knife.

Lauren Cole, prosecuting, said: "Daguanno sprayed a can of an unknown substance in Mr Rettie's eyes.

"He then lashed out with the knife, but failed to make contact.

"Mr Rettie's vision was blurred and he ran into the back garden, pursued by Daguanno who continued to brandish the knife at him.

"Mr Rettie grabbed a pole to defend himself and Daguanno then struck the rear door with the knife, shouting 'Get me f.....g money, get my money out'.

"The victim made his way to a nearby house and the police were contacted."

Defence agent Nicky Matteo said his client, who admitted previous convictions, has mental health issues.

Sheriff Petra Collins backdated the two-year jail sentence to June as Daguanno has been in custody since then.
