Lanarkshire thug admits beating ex 'about the head' over stolen money row

A man assaulted his girlfriend after she allegedly stole £100 from him.

Kieran Kelly struck the woman about the head at his flat in Baird Place, Bellshill, on July 14.

Kelly, 27, admitted the charge at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

An allegation that he tried to gouge the woman's eye was dropped.

He also admitted threatening police officers and spitting.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Kelly and his girlfriend both had problems with drink and drugs.

Kelly was angry after money went missing, but Mr Bruce told the court: "He was completely in the wrong when he reacted in this way.

"She has contacted him in prison to say she was sorry for stealing the money.

"In relation to the police, he believed they were being heavy-handed with him."

The solicitor added that his client has mental health issues.

Sheriff Ray Small noted that Kelly has previous convictions for domestic offences.

The sheriff jailed him for 21 months, but backdated this to July 15 as he had been in custody awaiting the case since his arrest.

Kelly was also ordered to stay away from his ex-girlfriend under a one-year non-harassment order.
