Lanarkshire theatre group set to hold first ever pantomime

A theatre group based in Lanarkshire are set to hold their first ever pantomime this week.

The Glasgow Theatre Society recently moved to Cambuslang Parish Church as their new base of operations, and they'll be performing panto favourite Cinderella there from Wednesday November 23 through until Saturday November 26.

It's the first time the long-running am dram group, who perform theatre, musicals and other shows , will tackle a panto.

The GTS's Aileen Reilly told Lanarkshire Live the cast members, and backstage workers, cannot wait to take to the stage.

She explained: "It's been written by Alan Whitehill, who's one of the long serving cast members. His dad was a huge pantomime fan and always fancied writing one, but has passed away, so Alan wanted to do this as a tribute to him.

"It's a classic panto with everything you'd expect. In rehearsals everyone is still laughing at the jokes, so that's a good sign!"

Aileen joined the group back in 2017 and has loved being part of it, even though Covid-19 forced a halt to their activities for two years.

Now she's delighted to be back involved, with the panto following on from a comeback concert earlier this year.

"We did a comeback concert with just singing onstage and that was so great for everyone. We originally thought we were coming back just before the second wave hit and then we were shut down again just as we'd started to meet again.

"There was a lot of disappointment about that, and then happiness to be back properly now - it was so nice seeing everybody singing and laughing."

The club are also looking out for anyone in the area who might fancy getting involved, with a production of Grease already earmarked for the spring next year.

Aileen added: "We're looking for some new blood. There's about 40 of us right now, and it's a really welcoming club, everyone is so nice and the standard is incredible. I know it sounds cheesy but you leave feeling so uplifted after a show."

Tickets for Wednesday and Thursday's performances are still available, although Friday and Saturday have sold out. They can be booked here.
