Lanarkshire takeaways set to compete in Scottish Curry Awards as 17 local takeaways up for top gongs

A host of Lanarkshire restaurants are competing at the prestigious Scottish Curry Awards this evening.

The event celebrates the top Asian curry professionals and businesses in the industry who provide the tastiest meals for their customers.

And as many as 17 local curry joints will represent Lanarkshire at the renowned black-tie awards ceremony taking place at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Glasgow Central.

Tonight's event is the 13th annual celebration of the awards and will see takeaways and restaurants from all over the district battle it out with the very best of eateries from all over Scotland.

Hamilton and Uddingston's The Original Mr Chef is up for a number of top gongs after being shortlisted in the list of finalists voted by the public.

They're joined by East Kilbride 's Punjabi Tadka as well as the Pink Turban Indian Restaurant in Wishaw, all competing for the prestigious restaurant of the year award.

Hoping to be crowned winners, The Original Mr Chef owner Wasim Arshad told Lanarkshire Live : “It is an absolute honour to be up for not one award but two.

"Outstanding takeaway of the year would be the cherry on the cake in a challenging year and give the limelight to the fantastic team here at The Original Mr Chef.

"Without my team, this is not possible. A truly Scottish event and I am really looking forward to the event.“

Categories for tonight's awards cover everything from 'curry champions of the year' to 'customer service of the year' with restaurants nominated from Hamilton; East Kilbride; Wishaw; Airdrie; Carfin; Uddingston; Coatbridge; Motherwell; Biggar; and Cumbernauld.

The awards highlight the growth of the Asian curry sector and recognise the achievements of those who work their hardest to perfect every meal. Those rewarded, will include chefs, restaurants, managers, takeaways, teams and curry schools.

A spokesman for the SCA 2021 said: “The curry campaign has been hugely successful across the UK with Scottish, English and London editions to the awards.

"The SCA were one of our first and remain one of our best awards. It’s always a brilliant night of fun, food and celebration.

“Despite the many challenges facing the curry industry, these awards prove year after year how much talent there is fuelling the industry, satisfying all of our curry cravings.

"We have an abundance of talent and fierce competition this year and we wish best of luck to all finalists.”
