Lanarkshire social group granted large sum of cash to help refurbish village hall

A social group has been funded over £100,000 to help refurbish a village hall in Clydesdale.

The funding was approved at South Lanarkshire Council’s (SLC) community and enterprise resources committee on December 7 to help transform Roberton Village Hall, located between Abington and Lanark.

Chairman of the committee, Councillor John Anderson, said he was "delighted" that the funding had been approved.

He added: "These grants which will help breathe new life back into both these exciting village projects

“Village halls play a vital role in the community and I am sure once these projects are completed everyone in the local area will benefit from these new community assets.”

The grant will be from the council’s renewable energy fund and a total of £102,535.95 will be funded from Andershaw Windfarm who are a contributor to the fund.

Roberton Social Group will use the cash for a major refurbishment project for the hall to provide a facility that meets the needs of the community.

The project has been established in response to community demand – it will improve rural exclusion, events, functions and activities for the area.

The group has been working closely with SLC's housing and technical resources to secure tender costs and timescales for the refurbishment of the project.

Within the project costs, an integrated audio-visual system will be installed as well as equipment and furniture to ensure the hall has activities the community can utilise while creating a welcoming atmosphere for the village hall.

Roberton Social Group has a membership of 35 regular volunteers and has consulted widely regarding the project to ascertain, co-ordinate and reflect the views of the community it represents.

The project is set to start in February 2022 and be complete by October 2022.
