Scotland’s film industry could be bolstered by a new film studio earmarked for North Lanarkshire.
A proposal of application notice (POAN) has been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) planning department in relation to a Film Studio Campus at Gartcosh Industrial Park.
If the development proceeds the international class film and television studios will be constructed at a site in Auldyards Road close to Police Scotland’s £82m Scottish Crime Campus and the nearby rail station.
The POAN has been submitted by Keppie Design, West Regent Street, Glasgow on behalf of Edinburgh Caledonian Film Studios.
The new development would come as a further boost to the film industry in North Lanarkshire, with the Wardpark Studios which are the home of hugely successful television series Outlander situated around a 10 minute drive away.
The bespoke Gartcosh studios are being billed as “The Zero Carbon Future for the Creative Sector” and would incorporate a recycling centre for waste it produces.
The EdinCal Studios website states that the North Lanarkshire studios will consist of a 44 acre campus comprised 305,000 square foot stage space supported by 168,000 square foot of workshop space and a further 10,000 square foot of production offices.
It also states that a vibrant hub will be created alongside the production studios, and that a single film or television production can create up to 600 jobs.
The campus will feature 10 sound stages, 12 workshops, a media hub, and an electrical sub-station.
Councillors representing residents in Ward 6 (Gartcosh, Glenboig and Moodiesburn) have been notified of the proposal of application, as have Gartcosh Tenants and Residents Association.
An online public consultation is to take place via the website from February 16 lasting for 21 days, which will include one live event.
