Lanarkshire sets new daily record for number of new Covid-19 cases

More than 900 new coronavirus cases were recorded in a single day for only the second time in Lanarkshire yesterday.

Figures released by the Scottish Government revealed 950 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the region on Wednesday, surpassing the previous daily record of 934 set just two days ago.

August has now been the worst month of the pandemic after total cases hit 9279 - the first time more than 9000 cases have been recorded in a single month

The previous record was set in January 2021 when 8567 Covid-19 cases were confirmed.

The coronavirus vaccination programme has reduced the number of deaths since then but a further two have been confirmed in Lanarkshire this week.

Throughout August, 15 people have died as a result of Covid-19 which is down from the 32 recorded in July and much lower than between October 2020 and February 2021 when the prevalence of the virus was high and at least 100 were recorded every month.

So far this week, 2713 cases have been announced in Lanarkshire making it the third highest on record with four days still to go.

Last week, coronavirus cases in Lanarkshire topped 3000 for the first time – almost double the previous week and that trend looks set to continue.

On Tuesday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned coronavirus restrictions could be reimposed after cases across the country doubled last week.

Yesterday, a further 4925 positive tests were recorded across Scotland - the second highest daily figure on record.

In total, 64,684 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Lanarkshire and 1387 people have died from the virus.

Lanarkshire has been the worst affected region in Scotland by coronavirus with 9771.6 cases and 209.5 deaths for every 100,000 residents.
