Lanarkshire schools and nurseries to remain open for now during coronavirus crisis

Schools, universities and nurseries across Lanarkshire, and the rest of the nation, are to remain open for the moment the First Minister of Scotland has announced today.

Nicola Sturgeon said there are no plans as of yet to close educational establishments, but added  this would be under review.

The First Minister did say however that planned school trips abroad should not be going ahead.

The main change the Scottish Government will be advising is that anyone showing the symptoms of the virus should “self-isolate” for seven days.

Mass gatherings of 500 people will be banned in Scotland as of Monday.

The First Minister said this was to free up emergency services, including police and ambulance crews, to deal with coronavirus.

Experts hope the switch from “contain” to “delay” will help delay a steep rise in cases until the late spring or summer, when the NHS will be under less pressure and the annual winter surge in demand eases.

The World Health Organisation labelled the coronavirus a pandemic last night.

A pandemic is a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.
