Lanarkshire's Covid community heroes to be honoured at parliament opening

Covid community heroes from across Lanarkshire are to be honoured at the official opening of the newly-elected Scottish Parliament in October.

Every MSP has been asked to nominate a constituent who has “made an extraordinary contribution to the lives of other people locally or nationally during the pandemic”.

The 129 people selected from across Scotland will be invited to contribute to the opening ceremony for Holyrood’s sixth session, taking place in early October.

Lanarkshire is represented by nine constituency MSPs, while the majority of the county falls into the Central Scotland electoral region which is represented by a further seven members.

Holyrood presiding officer Alison Johnstone said: “We have all heard of the difficult circumstances that many people in our communities have faced because of this pandemic – but we have heard so many uplifting stories of people and communities coming together to protect the most vulnerable.

“As we begin this new session of parliament, we are filled with renewed purpose, hope and determination to make things better for people in Scotland.

“It’s therefore fitting that we can use this occasion to tell the story of those across Scotland who have provided that optimism for others.

“As we seek to recover and rebuild our country, I am proud that the parliament can play its part in celebrating and honouring those who have made such a positive difference during challenging times.”
