More than 1000 people in Lanarkshire have died after testing positive for coronavirus.
The sobering milestone was confirmed today (Thursday, January 28) after a further 19 new Covid-19 deaths were recorded across the county, and just days after the UK recorded 100,000 coronavirus deaths.
In total, 1007 people have now died from coronavirus in Lanarkshire - 98 more than Australia.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today confirmed a further 82 deaths from coronavirus across Scotland to bring the total to 5970.
Only Greater Glasgow and Clyde (1,739) has seen more Covid-19 deaths than Lanarkshire in Scotland, but the rate of Covid-19 deaths here is almost 50 per cent higher than the national average.
Across Scotland, an average of 109.3 people per 100,000 population have died from coronavirus whereas Lanarkshire has seen 152.1 covid deaths per 100,000 population.
Only Ayrshire (152.4) has seen a higher death rate than Lanarkshire in Scotland.
In the first wave of the pandemic between March and July, just 353 people in Lanarkshire died from coronavirus.
January 2021 remains on track to be the deadliest month of the pandemic so far in the county.
Covid-19 deaths registered in the region have totalled 193 since the start of the year - only November (206) has seen more.
Across the globe, 84 countries have recorded less Covid-19 deaths than Lanarkshire including Australia (909), the UAE (805) and Norway (550).
In total, 32,361 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Lanarkshire after a further 233 were confirmed by the First Minister today.
