Lanarkshire resident comes up roses in gardening competition

Residents in Plains and Caldercruix brought bursts of colour to their villages as they took part in the areas’ popular annual Bonnie Barrels competition.

They created beautiful displays in the distinctive planters around the main streets and prominent locations; with Airdrie North councillors Alan Beveridge and David Cullen choosing the winners after a walking tour to judge the many entries.

In Plains, the competition was won by John and Elaine Grant, with Pauline Sullivan and Claire Sneddon coming second and third respectively.

The Airdrie bonnie barrels contest was won by the green-fingered parishioners at Plains Evangelical Church, with Billy Mains being crowned runner-up and Gillian Black coming third.

RJ Hendrie triumphed in the wee bonnie barrels section of the event, organised by residents’ group Plains Community Futures.

Chairman George McCutcheon said: “We’re grateful to everyone who looks after the barrel planters, and we also thank our sponsors, Inver House Distillery, for again supplying prizes.”

The two judges were “really impressed” by the standard of this year’s floral entries, with Councillor Cullen saying: “It’s terrific that there are so many great-looking barrels.

"Well done to the winners and to everyone that takes the time to keep the barrels looking at their best.”

Ward colleague, Councillor Beveridge, added: “Thanks to the efforts of so many residents in looking after the barrels, both Plains and Caldercruix villages look great.”

Plains residents are now looking forward to their next special event – a scarecrow competition running from October 11-16, during the school holiday week.

All are welcome to take part by building a scarecrow in their front garden during that time, and then uploading photos to the Plains Community Futures page on Facebook to enter; and prizes will be on offer for the top three designs.
