Lanarkshire refuse workers forced to flee bin lorry after blaze breaks out inside vehicle

Refuse workers in Wishaw were forced to flee a bin lorry they were travelling in after a fire broke out inside the vehicle.

The incident took place as the lorry was collecting rubbish outside the homes of residents on Branchall Road, Cambusnethan, on Sunday (January 23).

A local resident told Lanarkshire Live that something within the collected waste - believed to be batteries - caught fire, forcing the refuse workers to eject waste from the lorry and dump it on the street.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the scene to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, no-one was injured.

The area was then cordoned off before the waste was removed later that day and the road cleaned.

Following the incident, North Lanarkshire Council have issued a warning for locals not to dispose of batteries in household waste bins.

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: “A fire broke out inside one of our bin lorries on Branchall Road, Cambusnethan on Sunday. Waste from the lorry was ejected on to the road and the fire service extinguished the fire.

"Thanks to the quick actions of the crew, no one was injured and the vehicle was undamaged. The waste was removed later that day and the road cleaned.

“It appears the fire was caused by batteries, which can spark a fire when damaged. Batteries should not be disposed of in household waste bins but should be recycled responsibly. Many large retailers provide recycling bins for batteries.”
