Lanarkshire publican pulls her last pint after nearly 50 years behind the bar

A well-kent and popular Strathaven figure pulled her last pint at the weekend after nearly 50 years behind the bar.

Maureen Campbell retired from The Weavers after 48 years in the town's hospitality industry.

Customers and other staff members made sure the 67-year-old gran had a send-off to remember, with a farewell party and presentation.

Her parents previously ran The Bucks Head Hotel in Strathaven where she started age 20.

She then moved to The Weavers 15 years ago, taking on the business with her mum - who is now 93 - who was a silent partner.

Maureen, who now lives in Quarter, and her mum have been bought out by her brother, Brendan Smith, meaning The Weavers will remain in the family.

But, there were still plenty of tears shed, with Maureen telling Lanarkshire Live she will dearly miss working behind the bar, adding she has "loved every minute serving customers".

"I have never met such wonderful people as I have met in my early days at The Bucks Head and then The Weavers," she told us.

"I was totally overwhelmed by everyone's well wishes and was inundated with cards, flowers, presents, chocolates and alike. I am so very touched and humbled.

"The Weavers is a real community pub and the customers get behind everything we do. We have won The CAMRA Pub of the Year several times, although we haven't had the presentation for 2021 due to the pandemic, but this will happen soon.

"I am honoured to have been part of our customers' lives for so long and although I know I will see them out and about, it won't be the same. I will miss them all dearly.

"If they ever handed out prizes for the best customers, The Weavers would win hands down. I can honestly say I have loved working in the industry, chatting to people and getting to know them.

"A boy that works behind the bar just now, I know his father and I served his grandfather in The Bucks Head. I have known generations of families."

Now Maureen has retired she plans to spend more time with family including her three grown-up sons and five-month-old grandson, Oscar.

She added: "I also have to thank my mum and dad for all their hard work.

"If it wasn't for their grit and determination and many sacrifices, myself nor my brothers would have what we do today."

Maureen is well-known for arranging special events at the pub for the likes of Easter, Hallowe'en and Christmas as well as fundraising events for good causes including helping with Strathaven Round Table's Reindeer Day.

Paying tribute on behalf of customers at the pub, regular, Stewart Daniels, said: "Maureen's organisation of themed nights in the pub are renowned, as are the half-time pies during the Six Nations.

"Her enthusiasm and fondness for her customers has helped make The Weavers an award-winning Strathaven institution.

"We wish her a long and happy retirement. Thanks for the laughs Maureen, we'll miss you very much."
