Police nailed a drink-driver when they spotted him speeding and weaving across the road in Hamilton.
Peter Muir, 23, of Queen Street, Stonehouse, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.
Muir, who is serving a five-year sentence for other offences, admitted driving carelessly on Motherwell Road while more than three times the drink limit on November 9, 2019.
The court heard he was seen driving at excessive speed, with the wheels of his Skoda spinning, in a car park in Keith Street around 3.15am.
Muir then drove on to Motherwell Road and police officers noted the car was veering between the lanes of the dual carriageway.
At one point it mounted a grass verge and narrowly missed a barrier.
Muir accelerated towards the M74 and went on to the southbound slip road, but officers caught up with him when he stopped abruptly on the hard shoulder.
They approached the car and detected "a strong smell of alcohol".
The court heard that Muir was on bail at the time and was subsequently jailed for five years at the High Court.
The nature of that offence was not disclosed.
Sheriff Andrew McIntyre fined him £1350, but the fine will be written off as he is in prison.
Muir was banned from driving for five years and five months.
The sheriff told him: "In my view this was an extremely serious example of careless driving."
