Lanarkshire primary school pupils going for gold in events to mark the Winter Olympics

An East Kilbride primary school embraced all the fun of the Winter Olympics recently.

The event in Beijing drew to a close on Sunday but there were some medal winners right here in EK.

All of the children at the school, which caters for children with Additional Support Needs, were involved in a host of different Olympic themed activities.

And there was even snow to get youngsters and staff in the 'winter' mood.

Pamela Walker from the school told Lanarkshire Live : "The children met outside to kick off the Winter Olympic activities where there was a snow machine - a fantastic sensory, all immersive experience for the children.

"This was followed by sports activities provided by Active Schools - all with a Winter Olympic theme.

"The children learned new skills and had fun trying out ice hockey, curling, archery and snowball throwing.

"They also did more activities in their classrooms - including toboggan riding where the staff came up with a unique way to give the children another fantastic experience using scooter boards and big rubber rings.

"One of the classes had been busy earlier in the week making bob sleigh covers so that the children could wear them while racing round the bob sleigh track in the playground.

"As part of the Winter Olympic experience one of the classes got to try out ice skating at East Kilbride ice rink - something we are hoping to offer to other classes too and we also have some curling coaching on the ice rink lined up too."
