Lanarkshire police station closes as officers move in to local fire station

A Lanarkshire police station has closed with officers now taking up residence with fire service colleagues.

Lesmahagow police station has now been co-located with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in the town’s local fire station.

The plans to co-locate the two services have been long in development due to the former police station having limited flexibility to sustain policing demands and needs of the local community

Local area commander, Chief Inspector Lex Baillie, told Lanarkshire Live : “One of the key objectives of our estate strategy is to co-locate and collaborate more with our emergency service partners, enabling joint responses and quicker, better outcomes for the public.

“I would like to reassure the local community there will be no change in the quality of policing and no change in the quality of service they have come to expect from their local officers.”

The co-location will now provide the dedicated community police officers with new permanent, secure and self-contained accommodation and paves the way for decommissioning of the old police station to begin.

Chief Inspector Baillie added: “Lesmahagow fire station is already a well-established community landmark and it offers local policing new fit for purpose accommodation and a flexibility which our old premises could not.

“We have always worked closely with our emergency services partners and this co-location will only serve to strengthen that partnership and bring benefit to local residents.”
