Lanarkshire park will hold charity run in aid of great cause

Lanarkshire runners and walkers are set to put their best foot forward for a good cause with a charity event.

A fun run and walk around Overtoun Park in Rutherglen is to be held on Sunday June 12, to support Christian Aid, and organisers are hopeful of attracting more entrants ahead of the day.

There will be two routes on the day, with a 5k involving three circuits on pavements around the outside of the park, while an all ages 1k will take place entirely inside the park grounds.

Rhona Robertson, the chair of the Rutherglen Churches Christian Aid Committee that have organised the run, told Lanarkshire Live that it should be a fun event for all ages.

She said: "We've had over 130 participants at previous runs, and all the proceeds go to Christian Aid. It a really good family event and we want people to come along. It's something where you can run or walk at your own pace, so there is no pressure on you.

"We have had kind donations from Tunnocks and Tesco so there will be goody bags and certificates for every finisher, and Rutherglen Rotary have also kindly supported us by funding our online registration.

"The more people who take part on the day, the more fun the event will be - and the more hungry families Christian Aid's local partners can support in learning essential skills like growing drought-resistant crops.

"We're really looking forward to it."

Entry costs are just £5 for the 5K and £1 for the 1K event, with registration still open until June 8.

On the day itself the 1K, suitable for all ages, will be held at 2.30pm while the 5K will take place at 3pm.

Entrants to the 5K must be aged seven and older and under 12's must be accompanied by an adult.
