Lanarkshire park named as one of the top ten in UK once again

A South Lanarkshire park has once again been named one of the best in the whole of the UK.

At an online event hosted this month to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Green Flag Award, Strathaven Park was announced as one of the top ten parks in the UK as voted for in the People’s Choice Award.

Strathaven Park has held its Green Flag since 2013 and has made the top ten in the People’s Choice UK vote consistently since 2016.

The Silver Jubilee celebration event was hosted by Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Keep Wales Tidy, and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Along with the People’s Choice Award announcement eight further awards were presented to recognise employees, volunteers, young people, and initiatives linked to the Green Flag Award – an international benchmark for recreational outdoor space.

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I’m delighted that two Green Flag Award parks from Scotland have featured on the top ten list, out of over 2000 in the UK.

"I am not surprised that Strathaven Park has once again featured as one of the most loved parks in the UK – it shows just what an important place the park is for the local community and those who visit.

“Every single Green Flag Award winner provides an invaluable service to the local communities that it serves - creating a safe space to play, to think, to work out – and they helped to address many of the health and wellbeing challenges we faced as a country during lockdown.”

Almost 80 Scottish parks were presented with a Green Flag Award in October, joining over 2000 across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The accolade acknowledges quality green open spaces across the country that help to boost our nation's health and wellbeing.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Eoropie Dune Park, on Lewis appeared on the list for the first time.
