Lanarkshire music student's delight as song selected for showcase finale

Music students from New College Lanarkshire played a huge role in drawing the final curtain of a major showcase event.

HNC Music students Andrew Nicols and Liesl McNally had a video of their original song ‘ Sand ’ chosen to bring the curtain down on the College Development Network’s (CDN) inaugural #ChooseCollege event.

Going by the name of 'Drawing Time,' the duo’s track features Liesl on vocals and bass, Andrew on guitar, and also featured music lecturer, Scott Cowie, on drums.

CDN’s virtual showcase took place on May 26 and attracted almost 400 attendees, including college staff, current and prospective students, parents, carers, teachers, careers advisers, and school pupils.

Andrew, of East Kilbride, told Lanarkshire Live : “When lockdown was reinstated after Christmas, the recording of the track was completed at home, which was new for me.

"But after we had recorded all of our parts, Liesl mixed and mastered the track - from there we completed our individual video clips and Liesl edited an awesome video together, which ultimately completed the project.

"Our overall plan with this project was to bring a bit of light into a dark year with a happy, easy-going song.”

Liesl, from Motherwell, added: “For our song writing unit, we were tasked to write an original song in the style of another band or musician.

"Andy chose to take inspiration from the 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' and composed the guitar and instrumentals, while I wrote the lyrics and played the bass.

“We were really happy with how it turned out and decided to release the song along with a lockdown-style video under our duo project name Drawing Time.”

The duo's video is available to view online.
