Lanarkshire MSP backs proposed law designed to tackle dog thefts

A Lanarkshire MSP is backing plans to introduce a specific law to tackle dog thefts.

Graham Simpson's colleague Maurice Golden has launched a consultation on his proposed Members’ Bill which would make stealing a dog a crime in its own right.

If successful, the new law would not only increase punishments for those in Lanarkshire found guilty of the crime, but also act as a deterrent and improve safety for dogs and owners in the region.

The bill is backed by major animal welfare charities, who have estimated that dog thefts may have increased by up to 170 per cent during lockdown.

The consultation will now run for another 12 weeks until January 16 and Mr Simpson is urging everyone to give their views ahead of it progressing through the Scottish Parliament.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “I’m delighted to be backing my colleague Maurice Golden’s plans for a Dog Theft Bill.

Graham Simpson MSP (Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser)

“The law currently views a dog as the same as a household commodity. That must change to recognise their important place in our families – and this proposed legislation will ensure it does.

“I know many people in Lanarkshire used the lockdown period to get a family dog and how much joy they have brought to so many people.

“Unfortunately, the downside has been an increase in thefts. It will have been hugely traumatic for anyone in who has suffered that fate."

The Central Scotland Tory MSP added: “Too many criminals who commit this crime are getting away with it.

"The punishments need to be stronger, as do the deterrents against this sort of behaviour.

“With the consultation open on this bill, I would encourage everyone – not just dog owners – in Lanarkshire to respond with their views.

“That will give it the best possible chance of succeeding through the Scottish Parliament and ensuring that we clamp down on those who commit the crime of dog theft.”
