Lanarkshire MSP and former student praise university's new developments

Conservative MSP Meghan Gallacher says it was “amazing” to see the development of the University of the West of Scotland campus in Hamilton following a recent visit.

The Central Scotland MSP, who is a UWS graduate, experienced what it would be like to train for a marathon by using the extreme environment simulator during her visit.

This training technique uses a simulator to alter the temperature, altitude and humidity which helps an athlete adapt to the climate in which they will be competing.

Meghan also took the opportunity to praise executive director Marcus Ross and other staff for their efforts to support students during the Covid crisis.

The new UWS campus opened in Hamilton in 2018 following £110 million worth of investment and its top class training facilities have welcomed the Scotland Men’s Rugby Team, Celtic’s Women’s Football Team and Wheelchair tennis champion, Gordon Reid.

Ms Gallacher told Lanarkshire Live: “As a UWS graduate, I was delighted to come back for a visit in Hamilton.

"It was amazing to see how the campus has been developed in recent years and the new resources that they for the students.

“The pandemic has presented some really unique challenges for lecturers and students. However, Marcus Ross and his team have gone above and beyond to support students to ensure they have still received the top-class education they deserve throughout this crisis.

“With universities slowly returning to normality, the fantastic resources they have in Hamilton from paramedic simulators and extreme environment simulators will once again be a core element of the sports science curriculum.

“Everyone at UWS should be very proud of their achievements and their efforts during Covid. I encourage anyone who is wishing to start or continue their studies to heavily consider UWS as an option for furthering your career.”
