Lanarkshire MP joins Help for Heroes charity to mark anniversary

A Lanarkshire MP joined a veterans' charity in the House of Commons as they marked their 15th anniversary.

East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahgow MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, praised Help for Heroes and supports the work they continue to deliver.

Every day, men and women have to leave their careers in the armed forces as a result of physical or psychological wounds - their lives changed forever.

Since being founded in 2007, Help for Heroes has enabled wounded veterans to live secure and healthy lives with purpose.

They give them the strength to recover, by providing physical, psychological, financial and welfare support – when they need it and for as long as they need it.

In parliament, Ms Cameron discussed with Help for Heroes the importance of further support for the mental health of veterans, as well as the need for measures to support the rehabilitation of veterans who may have complex physical and mental injuries and training for GPs on supports for veterans.

The MP is looking on ways to work with Help for Heroes to further benefit veterans in East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow going forward.

Her husband is South Lanarkshire Council’s Veteran’s Champion and a veteran himself.

Speaking about the anniversary, she said: “I welcome the work that Help for Heroes has done over the last 15 years to make veterans’ lives better in the UK, and would encourage veterans in East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow who need support to reach out to Help for Heroes.

"As the wife of a veteran, I know just how difficult it is for the veteran’s community to seek help when needed and how vital it is that our veteran’s do not struggle on alone."
