Lanarkshire milk bottle pervert jailed for historic child sex abuse

A perverted greenkeeper who forced terrified schoolgirls to perform sex acts on him with a milk bottle has been jailed for 30 months.

In September, Peter Reid was found guilty of repeatedly preying on four youngsters inside his home in East Kilbride in the 1980s.

Sheriff Colin Dunipace previously branded the case “harrowing” and remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing.

Jailing him today, Sheriff Dunipace told the fiend: “This was an appalling catalogue of offences against innocent young girls.

“It was a systemic form of abuse geared towards providing you with sexual gratification.

“The evidence they gave was harrowing and it’s clear your behaviour has had a lasting detrimental effect on them into their adult lives.

“I commend the bravery of those witnesses who came to court to give evidence.

“There was a pattern of you preying on vulnerable girls. It was clearly pre-planned and by continuing to deny your guilt, you are trying to besmirch the character of those witnesses.”

Court previously heard how the now 69-year-year waited until his wife had left the house before engaging in sickening behaviour in his bathroom and bedroom.

He also exposed himself to girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, while he was working in his loft.

A complaint was made against him in 2019 and a police investigation led to other women being contacted, all of whom gave similar accounts of Reid’s twisted behaviour.

Reid - now of Barrhead - denied all wrongdoing between May 1981 and December 1985 and went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

But jurors took just an hour to unanimously convict him of four charges of lewd, indecent and libidinous practices towards the girls.

Giving evidence from behind a screen, one victim told depute fiscal Neil Thomson how Reid targeted her.

She told the court how Reid was in the bath and asked her to bring a glass milk bottle from the kitchen.

Upon returning, she found him naked - he then asked her to put the empty milk bottle on his penis.

The court heard how, on a separate occasion, Reid was in the loft of the house and beckoned the girl. Court heard how the victim could see Reid was naked from the waist down and his hands were on his genitals.

During the hearing a second victim told jurors how Reid also targeted her.

The court heard how he asked her to bring him a cup of tea - when she returned, he was naked in the bath and touching himself.

In evidence Reid, who worked in Rouken Glen Country Park, denied he had exposed himself or performed sex acts, suggesting his victims had made up the allegations.

After the guilty verdicts it was revealed Reid has a previous conviction for similar sexual offences from 1984 involving some of the same victims.

Reid’s lawyer said the dad-of-two continues to deny his guilt, adding he does not keep good health, having suffered two heart attacks.

Sheriff Dunipace also placed Reid on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.
