Lanarkshire man sent threatening messages to ex-partner via Skype and urinated in police van

A Lanarkshire man breached a court order almost straight away despite being told not to contact his former partner.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard Steven Hooks sent threatening messages to a woman via Skype.

And court also heard how she told prosecutors she only feels safe when Hooks is in prison.

Hooks, 40, of Branchalfield Drive, Cambusnethan in Wishaw, was given a five-year non-harassment order when he returned to the dock this week.

He was also put under supervision for two years and ordered to attend addiction and behaviour classes.

He admitted breaching a two-year non-harassment order imposed on October 26.

Hooks sent Skype messages to her between then and January 1.

He also admitted breaching bail conditions, urinating and spitting in a police cell van and hurling racist abuse at a Motherwell police station custody officer.

Defence agent Bobby Reid said his client had been in custody since New Year’s Day and had “taken time to reflect on his offending and the impact it has had”.

The lawyer added: “He is asking for a chance to engage again with a community payback order.”

Asked by Sheriff Liam Murphy for the woman’s views, prosecutor Jennifer Guy said: “She says she feels safe only when the accused is remanded.

“She requests another non-harassment order but for a longer period.”

Hooks has an unrelated previous conviction for serious assault that led to a 15-month jail stretch.

Sheriff Murphy agreed to release him on a fresh community payback order.

Hooks will also be confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day under a four-month electronic tagging order.
