Lanarkshire man jailed after ploughing into a Tesco delivery van

A driver who fled from police in a car with just three wheels and ploughed into a Tesco delivery van has been jailed for 23 months.

Daneil Shariff raced off in his Seat Toledo in Rutherglen, on April 24 last year.

The 25-year-old reached speeds of 87mph and smashed into a kerb during the pursuit.

The car lost a wheel as a result of the collision, but Shariff continued the chase.

He then crashed into a delivery van, pushing it off road, before being arrested by police.

Shariff pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving and a separate charge of possession of cannabis.

The court heard how cops ordered Shariff to stop his car on East Kilbride Road at 1.45pm.

He initially slowed down before racing off at 80mph in a 30mph residential area, before losing control of the car and driving on a grass verge, narrowly squeezing between a bus stop and a brick wall.

Prosecutor Claire Wallace said: “Shariff struck a kerb at 87mph resulting in his front wheel being detached from the car.

“The wheel propelled 200 yards down the road, but Shariff continued to accelerate and lost control again.

“He collided with a Tesco delivery van that was driving on the opposite direction of the road.

“He struck the middle of the driver's door with such force that the van was pushed off the road.

“The van was only kept upright as it rested on a near side wall.”

The Tesco driver only managed to get out of his vehicle through a window due to the damage to the van.

Police caught up with Shariff before he told them: “I’m sorry, I just panicked.”

Shariff was caught with £3600 of cannabis in the car and he was arrested.
