Captain Sir Tom Moore: Lanarkshire man charged over offensive tweet claim about 100-year-old

A man has arrested after it was claimed he posted an offensive tweet about Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The 35-year-old will face communications offence charges when he appears in court later this week.

Lanarkshire Police issued a statement today confirming they received a report in relation to the social media post following the death of the 100-year-old from Covid-19 last Tuesday.

Sir Tom became a national hero when he raised more than £32 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden during the first lockdown last year.

The World War Two veteran's remarkable achievement earned him the respect of people across the UK, and a knighthood from the Queen at Windsor Castle last year.

The sad news of his passing prompted an outpouring of tributes, and a millions clapped in his honour the following day.

Police say the man is scheduled to appear at Lanark Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
