Lanarkshire man blames divine intervention for setting fire to his flat

A Wishaw man who set fire to his home said he did it because God told him to.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Darren Law later told police officers, "you are Satan and I have to slay you."

Law, 25, appeared from custody via videolink on Friday.

He admitted wilfully setting fire to the first floor flat in Glasgow Road to the potential danger of neighbours on February 22.

Law also admitted trying to spit on a police officer at the scene.

He was the subject of two bail orders at the time.

Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said firefighters were alerted around 7pm.

On arrival, they were met by Law who admitted starting the fire and said he was "trying to keep Satan at bay".

He had set fire to a plastic plant pot and a plastic bin in a cupboard under the stairs. The flames were put out by firefighters.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Law has mental health issues.

Sheriff Thomas Millar called for a criminal justice social work report and deferred sentence until August 24.

Law was remanded in custody.
