Lanarkshire lout admits coughing at cops despite saying 'I've got COVID'

A woman has admitted assaulting four police officers by coughing at them after warning she had COVID-19.

The officers had responded to a report of trouble at Boots in East Kilbride's Kingsgate Retail Park.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Shannon Duffin was spoken to during their enquiries.

Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said: "She made officers aware she was supposed to be self-isolating due to her child returning a positive COVID-19 test.

"She then pulled down her mask and coughed towards them, stating 'I've got COVID'."

Duffin, 25, formerly of Ross Place, Rutherglen, admitted assaulting the officers by coughing at them on December 9 last year.

An allegation that she tried to pervert the course of justice by providing a false name was dropped.

Defence agent John McLaughlin said Duffin has mental health issues and is currently resident in a care organisation's housing unit in Glasgow.

Sheriff John Speir told the accused: "I take a very serious view of incidents like this that involve frontline services such as the police."

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports and Duffin was allowed to remain on bail.
