Lanarkshire locals have eye on the prize after community council competition

Several locals in a Lanarkshire town have walked off with prizes after proving to be sharp-eyed.

Earlier this year an eye-catching mural was installed at Cambuslang train station, which worked in nearly 30 images of buildings and places around the area.

Cambuslang Community Council (CCC), who were behind the mural, then asked residents to guess what each image represented, and now the locals who spotted the most have been rewarded with prizes from local businesses, including meals, relaxing health treatments and Scotrail tickets.

Chris Hannah, who designed the station mural and other murals in the town under the Cambuslang Gateway project, said: "Coming from Cambuslang, I was delighted to contribute to this great project.

"It was a real labour of love for me, visiting the places and spaces that local people had voted as their favourites, and creating a series of images that showcase them, as well as a few hidden gems that might sometimes go unnoticed”.

Michelle Farmer, the CCC member, who managed the Gateway Project, added: We’re delighted that local people have joined in the fun by trying to guess the images on the mural in our quiz.

"The station mural is intended to provide a bright and colourful welcome to the town and we’ve had tremendous feedback from locals and visitors.

"Some of the images will have been easy to guess, but several were tricky. We hope that everyone enjoyed trying to identify the different Cambuslang landmarks.

“We would also like to say a huge thank you to all the local businesses who kindly provided prizes. We have many great businesses in Cambuslang and were delighted that so many offered to donate prizes."

Nine lucky local people correctly guessed the most places correctly and won some great prizes kindly donated by local businesses.

They were Eilidh McCormack (meal for two at Cinnamon Cambuslang) Leila Lindsay (Reiki treatment from Donna Stevenson at The Loft) Lorraine Mills (therapy session at Sage & Thyme Therapies at The Loft), Natalie Sutherland (takeaway meal for two from Asian Tandoori Cambuslang), Allan Bradshaw (two Chinese munchie boxes from Amber Chinese takeaway) Elizabeth Bradshaw (ScotRail family ticket), Nicola Bradshaw (splash water toy from Morrisons), Magdalene Muir (bubble machine from Morrisons) and Susan Lamb (a £15 voucher from Morrisons).

Among the happy winners was Allan Bradshaw, who said: "We’re really happy with the prizes. My daughter Nicola spent two weekends exploring various parts of Cambuslang to find every landmark. The munchie boxes are a great reward for her dedication."

Eilidh McCormack, who won a meal for two at Cinnamon said: "I’m so pleased to win a Cinnamon meal as they serve such good food. I’ve just moved back into the area and one of the big benefits is being able to go to Cinnamon again.”

Natalie Sutherland, winner of the Asian Tandoori takeaway added:"I'm over the moon. Asian Tandoori is my favourite local takeaway and as soon as I got the news I started planning my menu!"

The Cambuslang Gateway project aims to improve the town in various ways.
