Lanarkshire lad transforms family room into perfect home pub

An apprentice joiner has created a perfect bar in his family home during lockdown.

Paul Joyce built the home-bar in the ‘family room’ of his parent’s East Kilbride home in a bid to give him a project and add some entertainment to the house during repeated lockdowns.

Complete with a beer torp and family-themed logo, the bar looks the part.

Paul’s mum, Laura, is delighted and said: “Paul only started his joinery apprenticeship in September last year and it’s really great he’s been able to build us such a great bar.

“He had no experience of this kind of thing before. He went straight from school to doing his apprenticeship and made the bar in his free time after work.”

Paul, 17, has worked throughout the pandemic and repeated lockdowns, but has enjoyed a project close to home.

Laura added: “Paul started and finished the bar in February doing it after his work and when he had free time and it’s been a really great addition to the house.

“It’s brought us together and gives us somewhere to sit and talk rather than in front of the TV.”

The whole Joyce family are looking forward to lockdown restrictions lifting so that they can invite friends and family round for a drink in the bar.

They already have a hot tub so are optimistic about being great hosts in the summer months.

“It’s just a shame we haven’t been able to show off the bar to friends and family yet, but we are looking forward to making the most of it,” Laura added.

“It was my husband’s birthday in February and were able to have drinks in there which was nice since we couldn’t get out as a family for a meal or drink.

“Paul turns 18 in June, so no doubt if restrictions allow, it will be well used.

“The bar has been a great addition to the house and with the hot tub, it would be nice to have some sort of get together in the better weather.”
